Private Lessons

“I want to express my appreciation for the intelligent insight which you provided this past semester. I find your teaching style conducive to the atmosphere that makes learning easier–for me, anyway. I learned a lot this term, and have a lot of respect for those who are well versed in this subject.” Kevin McNeal, jazz guitarist (studying post-tonal theory with me)

I teach private theory and composition lessons to beginner, intermediate and advanced students.  I teach modal and tonal counterpoint using Fux and Schoenberg counterpoint books and include analyses of Gregorian chant, Machaut, Tallis, Josquin DesPrez and Palestrina. I also teach Arnold Schoenberg’s Theory of Harmony and apply Schoenberg’s principles to analysis of Bach chorales.  And I teach composition.   Although I have my own specific style of composing, I believe each student has an authentic, unique voice and I will work with you to develop your own style.  I will tailor the lessons for your specific needs and desires whether you want to learn tonal harmony, extended harmony, atonal and 12-tone composition, modal, tonal, or atonal counterpoint, musical forms and analysis, orchestration, etc.

I give lessons in New York City, easily accessible by subway. My rate is $80 per hour lesson.
